Saving Forests from Pine Bark Beetles This is War
Переглядів 8 тис.День тому
Green pine slash and logs can breed pine bark beetles that can spread to and kill other pine trees. These pine logs are infested with ips bark beetles, that can be deadly to pine trees. I will use my Massey Ferguson MF 30 MF 34 tractor with Farmi winch to log them. I put them on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill to make lumber out of the ones I can. The rest and the off cuts I need to dispose of to...
To Mill or Not To Mill Black Oak That is the Question
Переглядів 8 тис.14 днів тому
Is this California black Oak really worth milling? I still have the butt log left to mill from the really tall black oak tree. I am trying to decide if it is worth making black oak lumber. Or maybe it would be better to process it as firewood. I have the log on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. Featured in this video is a battery powered Husqvarna 350i chainsaw. How DANGEROUS are Chainsaw Chaps?

This Is How Loggers Keep Mosquitos From Eating Them Alive
Переглядів 200 тис.21 день тому
Here is a simple logger trick to help repel mosquitos. I learned this as a young kid from my Dad while on his logging jobs. While walking through the woods, this simple technique helps get mosquitos to go away. It can be an alternative to mosquito repellant if mosquitos aren't too severe. If you have super mosquitoes where you are, it may not work as well. I don't know, I have only used it here...
Why West Coast Loggers Love Cutting High Stumps
Переглядів 44 тис.28 днів тому
West Coast loggers cut tree stumps higher than in some parts of the world. West Coast timber fallers have their reasons for cutting stumps high instead of close to the ground. We are working in an environment that is different than much of the world. Our trees are different and we produce a different product than some parts of the world where they do things differently. We use long bars on ...

Most of them have arguments that demonstrate they don’t understand fire ecology. ...

If the super close cut of the weed whacked works best for the poison oak I would probably just do that in the areas with poison oak and simply now with a mower the older areas that you have eliminated the poison oak from. That's a lot of work!

I've found that poison oak roots are shallow so the plant can be easily uprooted--as long as you're not terribly allergic to it and you're wearing gloves and long sleeves.

Something I learned over 12 years of doing this is that it's easier to make the angled cut first. Because it's easier to line your flat cut up with it than vice versa. At least it is for me.

I just run my fire in the open, when it gets a good bed of coals, i stick the hose on it and put the fire out. Then the next day I rake it out, let it sun dry. Once dry enough, i sieve it, then store it in onion bags to allow it to totally dry out.

I had 10 acres infested with poison oak that was fenced for cattle, but I needed it for sow (mother pigs) pasture so I put insulators on one of the wires so I could electrify it. When I turned the sows in the field they discovered that poison oak and thought it was dessert. They ate the easy stuff first, then what they could get at up the trees, and lastly rooted up the roots. When they were done there was none left with very little effort on my part.

In the old days kiln drying was just air drying with sticks in between the wood. I have a book somewhere showing bunks of wood drying in this manner and calling it kiln drying. Whatever. I know from my friends milling that we air dried the same and then stacked and stored without air space. Over time he milled enough and dried enough for his friends smallish barn. He still hasn't built it. The top layer has twisted a bit but the rest are perfect. Always store flat and weight on top and they are ready to use.

Your rational attitude is a breath of fresh air. Lately I've been unsubscribing to UA-cam channels that indulge in toxic politics, both liberal and conservative. I'm switching my attention to fellow rational Americans who sweat and do real actual work both physical and mental and know that the world works a bit differently than extremist politicians would have us believe.

I used to do alot of tree work including some climbing. I have some bigger gas saws, but I don't drag them out unless I have to. If I work with a gas saw for any time at all, I smell myself off gassing fumes for the entire next day. I just don't think that is good for us and I think of the damage I did to myself running a gas saw day after day. Electric saws are in their infancy. They will only get better. The fire hazard concern is a real thing. I keep bees and some of my sites I have to drive over tall dry grass. I am paranoid that my gas truck will start a fire. I am planning to eventually get an electric truck and this will be one of the benefits. That and the gas savings when I drive 100 km a day. We do have an ev and solar panels and it saves us lots on fuel as our commute into town is 30 km one way. We do not drive the gas cars unless we have to.

I wonder what would happen if you covered them in wood glue (PVA) whilst they were wet. I wonder if the glue all through the fibres from the wetting out of it in water would be enough to pull against the tension in the wood as it dries. Then flip and repeat. I have some warped plywood but I don’t think that would quite work the same 😄
